From the Brink to the Broncos: Gehamat Shibasaki’s Incredible NRL Comeback

Gehamat Shibasaki’s rugby league journey has been anything but smooth, but his perseverance and determination have finally paid off. The 26-year-old centre, affectionately known as “Gem,” was on the brink of seeing his NRL career fade away before Brisbane Broncos coach Michael Maguire threw him an unexpected lifeline.

After limited first-grade opportunities over the years, playing just six NRL games across stints with South Sydney, North Queensland, and Newcastle, Shibasaki found himself playing in the Queensland Cup for the Townsville Blackhawks in 2023. With his NRL future uncertain, he joined Wynnum-Manly for the 2024 season, preparing to balance his part-time playing contract with a career in youth development.

Still holding onto his dream, Shibasaki accepted a train-and-trial opportunity with the Broncos. At first, he believed his time at the top level had passed, but through sheer hard work and commitment, he impressed the coaching staff. His dedication earned him a development list contract, and against all odds, he has now cemented himself as the Broncos’ starting left centre.

Beyond his on-field success, Shibasaki remains passionate about mentoring young people, using his journey as an example of resilience and perseverance. Now, as part of a high-flying Broncos squad, he is making the most of his second chance in the NRL.
