A former NBA first-round draft pick shocked the basketball world by walking away from a $17 million deal to retire at just 21 years old—choosing faith over fame. In an emotional YouTube video, the young athlete, AJ Griffin, revealed his decision to leave basketball behind and pursue a new path as a full-time minister.
“To bring it all down to a short summary, I gave up basketball to follow Jesus,” Griffin shared. “I know to many, this seems like a loss, but I’m truly excited because I get to serve God with my full ‘Yes.’”
Griffin explained that his spiritual journey began in 2020 when he first gave his life to Christ. “We always say we find God, but really, He finds us,” he said, reflecting on his transformation.
The former Pelicans guard’s decision drew support from his peers. Dejounte Murray, Griffin’s former Atlanta Hawks teammate, offered heartfelt encouragement: “Love YOU Always Bro!!! Forever With You!!”
