Former Brisbane Broncos coach Kevin Walters has weighed in on the controversy surrounding star fullback Reece Walsh, urging the 22-year-old to be more mindful of his actions, especially on social media. Walsh came under fire after posting — then quickly deleting — a video showing him punching a friend in the head while wearing a boxing glove at a social gathering. Though intended as a joke, the footage drew backlash, prompting the Broncos to launch an internal investigation.
The incident came at a difficult time for both Walsh and the club. He is currently sidelined for a month with a knee injury, during which the Broncos have struggled, losing five of their last six games. After meeting with club management on Wednesday, Walsh was ordered to apologise and make a donation to the Black Dog Institute, a mental health charity.
Speaking on Triple M radio, Walters stressed the importance of being aware of the public spotlight. “Just be more sensitive to the environment you’re in,” he said, noting that any content shared online can quickly escalate. Walsh later acknowledged the mistake, saying, “It’s not a good look for myself. It was just trying to have a laugh with mates.”
