A 19-year-old New Zealander, identified as Ryan Satterthwaite, tragically died after sustaining a serious head injury during a social media-driven game of “run it straight” with friends in Palmerston North. The game, which involves one player with a ball trying to break through a tackle from another player, has gained popularity, especially among young men, due to its viral nature online. Despite its casual nature, the game has raised serious safety concerns due to the risk of head trauma.
Satterthwaite passed away in hospital on Monday following the accident, prompting police to urge caution to others considering taking part in such risky activities. Police spokesperson Ross Grantham emphasized the potential dangers of impromptu games like “run it straight,” even if they are not part of organized events. He noted that while this case wasn’t a police matter, investigations would continue on behalf of the coroner.
The game, which has been a backyard tradition in New Zealand and Australia, has recently gained attention through social media challenges and even tournaments, like the Runit Championship League.
