Wilson’s Heartfelt Tribute to Xiao Guodong: A Fierce Rival’s Victory and His Own Path to Rest After Thrilling Final
After a tough, hard-fought battle, Wilson was quick to credit his opponent, Xiao Guodong, for an exceptional performance. “Xiao played an absolutely stellar match today. It was a real contest out there, and he truly deserved the win,” he said. Having known Xiao for many years, Wilson was genuinely inspired by his success. “We’ve shared the same journey in some ways, and seeing him come out on top is really inspiring. I know how much he’s put into this, and I’m so happy for him,” Wilson added.
While second place is undoubtedly an achievement, Wilson couldn’t hide the feeling of disappointment. “It stings a little, honestly. It’s been a long season—so much hard work—and being so close to the top makes it tough to walk away without the win,” he reflected. The physical toll of the sport had also started to catch up with him, and he was looking forward to taking some time off. “My body’s feeling the wear and tear, and I think it’s time to step back, rest, and recharge. The idea of just sitting on the couch, no pressures, no schedules… that’s sounding pretty good right now.”
Wilson’s career has been a testament to persistence. After winning the IBSF World U-21 Championship at a young age, he turned professional in 2004. Though he faced setbacks, including a drop off the tour in 2006, he fought his way back, regaining his pro status in 2013. During his amateur years, he clinched the English Amateur Championship in 2012 and reached the final of the World Amateur Championship the same year.
Known for his cue ball control and break-building, Wilson has since won three ranking titles, including the 2022 and 2023 Scottish Opens, and the 2024 Welsh Open. Despite not securing the title today, Wilson remained optimistic and supportive of Xiao’s future. “It’s been a great tournament and a wonderful experience here in Wuhan. Hats off to Xiao, and I’ll be cheering for him all the way moving forward.”
