Steve Kerr Calls Out Brandin Podziemski After Costly Mistakes in Warriors’ Loss to Nuggets: ‘He Cannot Be That Guy

The Golden State Warriors suffered a frustrating 119-115 loss to the Denver Nuggets, and coach Steve Kerr didn’t shy away from expressing his disappointment—both with the game and with guard Brandin Podziemski’s decision-making.

In his postgame press conference, Kerr praised Podziemski’s potential but emphasized areas where the second-year guard must improve. “Podz is a hell of a player, but he needs to be a smart player,” Kerr said. He highlighted a critical turnover late in the second quarter when Podziemski attempted an ill-advised lob, leading to an easy Denver basket.

“He had the same play last week against Brooklyn,” Kerr added, referencing a similar mistake. Kerr also criticized Podziemski’s defensive discipline, particularly fouling Michael Porter Jr. twice on three-point attempts.

“He cannot be that guy,” Kerr stated firmly. “He’s got to be a smart, tough, great decision-maker, and he’s capable of it. That’s his next step.”

This wasn’t the first time Kerr showed visible frustration during the game. After Podziemski’s first foul on Porter, Kerr delivered an animated sideline lecture, underscoring his expectations. Podziemski acknowledged the criticism and took responsibility for his performance, admitting, “I played poorly.” He highlighted moments when he pressed too hard defensively, leading to fouls, and referenced a turnover he regretted.

Despite his mistakes, Podziemski showed maturity in his response. “He knows he can get on me, and I’m not going to respond emotionally,” he said. While he felt confident in his offensive contribution—scoring 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting with four assists—he was critical of his defensive lapses and five fouls.

Podziemski’s struggles and Kerr’s challenge set the stage for the Warriors’ upcoming games. Whether Podziemski maintains his role or shifts to the bench will depend on how he responds to Kerr’s call for smarter play and greater discipline.
