Giannis Sidelined Late, Lillard Shines with 37 as Bucks Extend Win Streak to 5
Giannis Antetokounmpo, who had been listed as probable due to a calf strain, was a late scratch before Tuesday’s game after experiencing discomfort in his knee during pregame warmups. The Bucks’ coaching staff, including head coach Doc Rivers, was informed about an hour before tip-off, prompting last-minute adjustments to their game plan.
Rivers admitted postgame that he still wasn’t entirely sure about the specifics of Antetokounmpo’s knee issue but trusted the decision to rest him.
“Giannis doesn’t miss many games,” Rivers noted. “Whatever it is, I’m sure it was the right call.”
Despite Antetokounmpo’s absence, Damian Lillard rose to the occasion, delivering a stellar performance with 37 points and 12 assists. Lillard emphasized the team’s collective effort in overcoming the void left by their superstar. “Everybody has to do a little more when such a big piece is missing,” he said. “But I know my teammates are counting on me to step up.”
Antetokounmpo, enjoying a career-best season with averages of 32.4 points, 11.9 rebounds, and 6.4 assists, has missed just two games so far. His first absence came on November 4 against the Cavaliers due to a right adductor strain. The Bucks, however, secured their fifth consecutive win on Tuesday, improving their record to 9-9 after a tough 2-8 start to the season.
Reflecting on the turnaround, Lillard credited the team’s resilience. “We stayed together, looked in the mirror, and made adjustments. It’s not about celebrating, but we’re heading in the right direction, beating good teams, and showing our play is sustainable.”
