Mavericks’ Arena Saga Heats Up: High-Stakes Battle to Keep Team in Dallas Intensifies

Discussions between the Dallas Mavericks and the city of Dallas regarding potential locations for a new arena have gained momentum in recent days. These negotiations, once held behind closed doors, have now become more public, signaling a crucial stage in the team’s efforts to secure a long-term home within the city.

City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert reaffirmed the city’s commitment to keeping the Mavericks in Dallas, emphasizing the longstanding relationship between the franchise and the community. “The Mavericks have called the City of Dallas home for the last 45 years,” Tolbert stated on Tuesday. “We are committed to the long-term relationship we have established with them and are working closely with team officials to keep them in Dallas – where they belong.”

The discussions come at a time when the city of Irving is considering rezoning a 182-acre site, primarily owned by Las Vegas Sands Corp., for a potential arena, entertainment resort, and possibly a casino. This development is noteworthy given that Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont is the Chief Operating Officer of Las Vegas Sands.

Despite the potential alternative in Irving, Mavericks CEO Rick Welts made it clear that the team’s priority is securing a new arena in Dallas. He described city officials, including Mayor Eric Johnson and Tolbert, as highly supportive and engaged in the process. Welts outlined the team’s immediate goal: to identify and acquire a 30-to-50-acre site within the next year for an arena and an expansive entertainment district.

“Our commitment is to exhaust every possible option in the city of Dallas before considering a move elsewhere,” Welts stated. “That’s our desire. That’s the outcome we want.”

Welts reiterated this stance during a conference call with the Dallas Mavericks Advisory Council, a diverse group of 28 community and business leaders. However, neither the Mavericks nor city officials disclosed specific sites under consideration, citing concerns that publicizing details could drive up property prices.

While discussions remain broad at this stage, Welts confirmed that several locations have been explored in general terms. However, the team has yet to reach the point of finalizing maps or specific blueprints.

As talks progress, the Mavericks remain steadfast in their commitment to remaining in Dallas, striving to secure a state-of-the-art venue that would benefit both the team and the broader community.
