Laurie Daley Returns: NSW Blues Take Bold Gamble for 2025 Origin Glory

Laurie Daley’s return as the New South Wales State of Origin coach for the 2025 series has sparked a mix of reactions, but the decision has been strongly defended by NSWRL Chairman Paul Conlon. Daley, who previously coached the Blues from 2013 to 2017 and secured one series win, was selected over a strong field of candidates, including Matt King, Michael Maguire’s assistant.

Despite his past record of six losses in his final nine games as coach, the NSWRL board made a unanimous decision to bring him back.

Conlon addressed the skepticism surrounding the appointment, emphasizing that mixed reactions are inherent in rugby league. Drawing parallels to the initial criticism when Michael Maguire was appointed, he said, “It’s just the nature of rugby league – it will never all be positive reactions.”

The selection process involved a comprehensive review of all applicants, with the limitation that no current NRL head coach could take on the Origin role. This constraint, however, paved the way for a unique advantage: the inclusion of Melbourne Storm coach Craig Bellamy as Daley’s advisor. According to Conlon, this partnership played a pivotal role in Daley’s appointment, as Bellamy’s mentoring adds immense value to the coaching staff.

“Laurie hasn’t been actively coaching for some years,” Conlon acknowledged. “But his pedigree, combined with an exceptional support staff and Bellamy’s guidance, creates a robust foundation for success.”

Daley will also benefit from inheriting the structure established by Maguire during New South Wales’ 2024 series victory over Queensland. Conlon emphasized that the groundwork laid by Maguire remains intact, with the existing support staff eager to continue their involvement. This stability, he noted, allows Daley to focus on execution rather than overhauling systems.

“It’s a perfect scenario for Laurie,” Conlon said. “Why disrupt what already works? He can step in and build on a framework that’s proven effective.”

With Bellamy’s expertise and a cohesive support staff, Daley has a strong platform to lead New South Wales and retain the shield in 2025. The combination of continuity, experience, and mentorship offers a promising pathway for the Blues’ future under Daley’s leadership.
