Snooker Shockwave: Selby, Hawkins, and Totten Pull Out of World Open – Medical Withdrawals Shake Up the Tournament
Next week’s World Open in China will see some unexpected changes, as three prominent snooker players—Mark Selby, Barry Hawkins, and Chris Totten—have been forced to pull out due to medical issues. The tournament, which runs from March 16 to March 22 in Yushan, will proceed with a few adjustments to the draw.
Selby, who had been set to face Michael Holt in the opening round on Tuesday, March 17, will no longer compete. As a result, Holt will advance automatically to the last 32, earning a bye. Similarly, Hawkins was scheduled to meet Ian Burns, but with his withdrawal, Burns will also receive a free pass into the second round.
Meanwhile, Chris Totten, who had been set to face Judd Trump in a held-over first-round match, has had to pull out for medical reasons as well. To fill Totten’s spot, the tournament organizers have called up Mark Lloyd, the highest-ranked player from the Q School top-up list. This change adds an extra layer of unpredictability to the draw.
