The Sydney Roosters, one of the NRL’s most iconic clubs, are reportedly exploring a bold expansion into English rugby league. According to a recent Sydney Morning Herald report, the Roosters are eyeing a potential takeover of Salford Red Devils, with an ambitious plan to rebrand the club as the ‘Manchester Roosters’—a strategic move intended to align Salford with the Roosters’ established brand identity.
However, this potential acquisition hinges on a larger development: the NRL’s proposed 33% stake in Super League, a deal currently under discussion in Australia. Roosters chairman Nick Politis, a key figure in this initiative, believes the NRL’s involvement is critical. Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald, the 80-year-old billionaire businessman said, “Nothing will happen unless the NRL is involved. We see a lot of potential for the game in England and we want to be part of it if the NRL is on board. We see an opportunity and we will wait to see what happens next.”
The Roosters’ interest doesn’t stop at Salford. Championship clubs York Knights and London Broncos have also emerged as possible targets for investment. The speculation gained traction after York owner Clint Goodchild was spotted at a Roosters match alongside Politis, fueling talk of deeper collaboration. The move signals a significant potential shift in transcontinental rugby league dynamics, with the Roosters seemingly eager to plant roots in the UK market and help elevate the sport’s global presence.
