Mark Williams Drops Bombshell: “The Other Two Will Be Retired” — But Willo Isn’t Going Anywhere!
Mark Williams has made it clear that, when it comes to the legendary Class of ’92, he has no intention of being the first one to call time. 👀🎱
While Ronnie O’Sullivan has spoken about giving himself around 18 months to revive his snooker career, and John Higgins has also hinted that he has an end date in mind, Williams is taking a very different approach. The Welshman is simply refusing to put a deadline on his career.
“I will carry on for as long as it is,” Williams said, making it clear that he plans to keep competing for as long as he still enjoys the game. Even if his ranking drops and he is no longer challenging for the biggest titles, the three-time world champion insists he will keep turning up and doing what he loves.
Williams was also brutally honest about the current state of the Class of ’92. He admitted that none of the trio are the players they once were, with Higgins and O’Sullivan both struggling to consistently reproduce the brilliance that made them household names.
And that honesty has sparked plenty of debate among snooker fans.
Social media user Martin D summed up one side of the argument by suggesting Ronnie should retire, questioning why fans should continue paying to watch him when he chooses to miss so many events.
But there is another way of looking at Williams’ approach.
His “come what may” attitude may be exactly what has allowed him to remain so relaxed and dangerous around the table. Williams has always played snooker with a natural freedom that is difficult to teach. Even now, when results may not come as regularly as they once did, there are flashes of the genius that made him one of the sport’s greats.
Fans only need to watch Williams playing doubles with his son against Stephen Hendry and David Page on Hendry’s YouTube channel to see it. The Welshman looks completely at home—loose, hilarious, instinctive and still capable of producing some outrageous shots.
That is perhaps the beauty of Mark Williams.
He isn’t promising trophies. He isn’t setting himself a dramatic retirement deadline. He isn’t pretending he is still the player he was 20 years ago.
He is simply going to keep playing.
“Keep on trucking,” as Willo himself put it.
And while Ronnie and Higgins may be preparing to write the final chapter of their extraordinary careers, Williams seems perfectly happy to keep turning the pages. 👏🎱
