From Bust to Breakout? Giants’ Evan Neal Reinvents Himself in High-Stakes Move to Guard
The New York Giants are seeing promising signs from offensive lineman Evan Neal as he transitions from tackle to guard—a move viewed as critical to revitalizing his NFL career. Once adamant that he was “born to play” tackle, Neal has fully embraced the position change, showing a new level of commitment and flexibility that has impressed coaches.
A year ago, injuries and inconsistent performance clouded Neal’s future. Now healthy, he’s approaching this offseason with a refreshed mindset and a willingness to adapt.
Offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo is overseeing Neal’s development and stressed that the position switch isn’t a guarantee of playing time—it must be earned. “You gotta earn it every day, and you have to earn it every year. Nothing is assumed,” said Bricillo. “Competition is a good, healthy thing that we all firmly believe in.”
Bricillo also noted the mental adjustment Neal is making, particularly in reading defenses from the interior line. “It’s about training your eyes and how you react when the picture changes,” he said.
While the Giants are hopeful Neal can lock down a starting spot, they won’t rush the process. The focus remains on steady growth and proving he belongs—regardless of position.
