Lakers on Brink of Major Loss: Finney-Smith Drawing League-Wide Interest
The Los Angeles Lakers could soon lose a valuable starter, as veteran forward Dorian Finney-Smith is expected to attract “considerable” interest from teams across the NBA, according to Jake Fischer via Substack. Finney-Smith holds a $15.4 million player option for next season but has until Sunday to decide whether to exercise it or test free agency in pursuit of a longer, more lucrative deal.
At 32, Finney-Smith is exactly the kind of player teams covet—versatile, experienced, and highly efficient. Standing 6-foot-7, he’s known for his elite perimeter defense and ability to space the floor, shooting 41.1 percent from three last season. His catch-and-shoot reliability, coupled with his defensive acumen, makes him an ideal fit in today’s NBA.
There’s also added chemistry with Lakers star Luka Dončić, whom Finney-Smith played alongside for five seasons in Dallas. That familiarity has helped ease his transition in Los Angeles and contributed to his strong performance this past season.
However, should Finney-Smith choose to hit the open market, he’s expected to become one of the top frontcourt targets at the midlevel exception range. That could create a financial hurdle for the Lakers, who are also eyeing other needs—particularly a true center. Reports suggest the team is interested in free-agent big man Clint Capela, who could be signed using the taxpayer midlevel exception.
If Finney-Smith opts out and a bidding war ensues, the Lakers may not be able to retain him without sacrificing their broader roster goals. His decision looms large as the team maps out its offseason strategy.
