Draymond Green Re-Signs as Golden State’s LeBron Dream Officially Collapses
After weeks of speculation, the veteran forward has agreed to a one-year, $27.7 million contract to remain with the Golden State Warriors. Interestingly, it is the exact same figure Green walked away from when he opted out earlier this offseason—a move that was never about securing a bigger payday but about giving the Warriors maximum financial flexibility in their pursuit of LeBron James and other marquee stars.
That gamble ultimately came up short.
LeBron chose to continue his career with the Philadelphia 76ers, ending Golden State’s hopes of adding another superstar alongside Stephen Curry. With every major target now off the board, the Warriors have turned back to one of the franchise’s most important figures.
Green’s return was widely expected. Reports throughout the offseason suggested both sides always intended to continue their partnership. His opt-out was viewed as a strategic decision designed to create cap room, not a negotiating tactic for a richer contract.
Speaking on The Draymond Green Show, Green even suggested that the long-standing rivalry between LeBron and the Warriors may have played a significant role in the four-time MVP declining the opportunity to join Golden State.
Now, the Warriors appear set to enter the new season with largely the same roster that finished 37-45, claimed the Western Conference’s 10th seed, and fell short in the Play-In Tournament. Outside of adding rookie Yaxel Lendeborg, Golden State has made no significant additions, leaving plenty of questions about the team’s direction.
Green remains the emotional heartbeat and defensive leader of the franchise, although he’s no longer the dominant All-Star of his prime. Last season, he averaged 8.4 points, 6.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists while continuing to anchor one of the league’s most disciplined defences.
Many fans believe Green’s new contract is less about market value and more about rewarding a franchise icon for everything he has accomplished. One supporter noted that Green re-signed for the exact amount he originally declined because he was prepared to sacrifice millions if it meant creating enough space for LeBron. Instead, with LeBron choosing Philadelphia, Green simply returned on the same terms.
Whether continuity can spark one last championship run or signals the closing chapter of the Warriors’ dynasty remains to be seen. But for now, Golden State is placing its faith in the championship core that defined an era, hoping it still has one more memorable run left.
