On a June 29 episode of NBA on ESPN, NBA insider Bobby Marks shed light on the complications surrounding any potential Cavaliers pursuit of James. “I’m not going to start proposing LeBron James trades,” Marks began, before acknowledging the inevitable speculation. He pointed out that while Cleveland will likely be linked to James if talks progress that far, the team’s salary cap situation makes a trade extremely difficult.
“The way the Cavaliers are structured now, they’re buried in the [first] apron,” Marks explained. “They can’t aggregate contracts—meaning they can’t combine players like Darius Garland and Max Strus in a deal. Under the old CBA, they could. Now, they’re also not allowed to take back more money than they send out in a trade.” These restrictions make it nearly impossible for teams over the first apron to execute blockbuster trades, particularly for superstars like LeBron James.
