Daley Proves the Critics Wrong as Blues Storm Suncorp in Series-Winning Statement
For much of the 2026 State of Origin series, New South Wales’ forward pack was criticised for failing to match Queensland’s physicality. As the pressure mounted and the series reached a winner-takes-all decider at Suncorp Stadium, many questioned whether Laurie Daley’s men had the toughness required to conquer one of rugby league’s most intimidating venues.
They answered those doubts in emphatic fashion.
The Blues produced one of their most complete performances in recent Origin history, overpowering Queensland through the middle before Nathan Cleary took control to steer NSW to a memorable series-clinching victory. While Cleary’s brilliance will deservedly dominate the headlines after finally delivering the defining Origin performance of his career, the platform was laid by a relentless pack that refused to take a backward step.
Payne Haas was immense from the opening exchanges, charging into the Maroons’ defence and repeatedly bending the line with powerful carries. His physical dominance, including several bruising confrontations with Queensland captain Cameron Munster, set the tone for the visitors. Liam Martin’s return from injury also proved inspired. After missing the opening two matches, the Penrith back-rower brought his trademark aggression and intensity, unsettling Queensland all night while creating opportunities in attack, including the play that led to Cleary’s second try.
Around them, the Blues’ engine room delivered across the park. Reece Robson silenced his critics with a sharp display from dummy-half, Hudson Young worked tirelessly throughout another 80-minute effort, and captain Isaah Yeo once again provided calm leadership and consistency. Daley’s bench also delivered at the perfect time, with Cameron Murray crashing over for a crucial try, Addin Fonua-Blake providing valuable impact through the middle, and Blayke Brailey helping seal the contest with the final attacking play that sent Young over as the siren sounded.
For Daley, the victory was especially satisfying. His selections and interchange strategy had come under heavy scrutiny throughout the series, but every key decision paid off when it mattered most, delivering NSW just their fourth State of Origin series-deciding victory at Suncorp Stadium.
Not everyone, however, celebrated without reservation. Blues supporter Nick D admitted the victory came with mixed emotions, saying he was thrilled NSW had lifted the shield but felt the result was “a little hollow” because Ashley Klein officiated the decider, leaving him questioning whether the contest would be viewed as completely fair. Despite those concerns, Nick was quick to praise Daley for proving his doubters wrong, acknowledging that the coach had justified the faith placed in him. Like thousands of Blues fans, he finished with a simple but heartfelt celebration: “How bloody good is it to win a decider at Suncorp? Go the Blues!”
