Ronnie O’Sullivan wasted no time announcing himself on the seniors stage, cruising to a commanding 4-1 victory over Ken Doherty in his debut match at the World Seniors Snooker Championship.
The seven-time world champion looked every bit the elite competitor fans have admired for decades, producing classy breaks of 56, 52 and a superb 93 to comfortably overpower Doherty. From the opening frame, O’Sullivan controlled the pace and quality of the contest, leaving little doubt about who would advance. His trademark cue action, sharp safety play and effortless scoring reminded spectators why he remains one of the sport’s most feared talents, regardless of age category.
There was barely any time for celebration after the win, as “The Rocket” quickly turned his attention to another clash later in the evening against Peter Lines, who secured his place after defeating Stuart Bingham earlier in the day. With O’Sullivan entering the competition in such dominant form, anticipation around the tournament immediately intensified.
However, his participation has also sparked debate among sections of the snooker community. Social media user Lizzy J questioned whether active stars from the professional tour should be allowed to compete in an event many fans traditionally associate with retired or semi-retired players.
According to her, O’Sullivan’s victory felt almost inevitable given the huge gap in current competitive sharpness between him and many of the seniors field. She argued that the tournament was originally designed to give former professionals a platform to continue competing and entertaining fans, rather than allowing still-active elite players to dominate the event.
With O’Sullivan already looking a class above the field, some supporters now believe anything less than lifting the trophy would come as a major surprise.
