Historic 2026 World Snooker Championship Kicks Off: Zhao Xintong Defends Title in Crucible’s 50th Anniversary Showdown
The World Snooker Championship, the premier event of the season, begins tomorrow. It will be held in Sheffield, England, at the Crucible Theatre from April 18 to May 4. This marks the 50th anniversary of the tournament at the Crucible Theatre.
The defending champion is 29-year-old Chinese snooker player Zhao Xintong. Last year, Zhao made history by becoming the first-ever World Champion from China and Asia. He also became the third player to win the World Championship after starting from the qualifiers, and the first amateur (an unranked player). In the final, Zhao defeated Mark Williams 18-12.

The 2026 World Championship will feature a record number of Chinese players — 11 in total. This beats the previous record set last year, when 10 Chinese players competed in the Crucible for the first time.
Bonuses for maximum breaks: £40,000 in the main tournament and £10,000 for qualifying rounds.
An additional £147,000 bonus is offered to players who manage two maximum breaks in Triple Crown events or in the major tournament in Saudi Arabia this season. Ronnie O’Sullivan and Chang Bingyu have already earned this bonus earlier in the season.
Ranking Points for first-round losses (1/16): Only qualified players will earn ranking points. Seeded players from the top 16 who lose in this round will only receive prize money.
Tournament Format: The format for the World Championship remains unchanged: first-round matches will be played to 10 frames, second-round and quarter-final matches to 13 frames, semi-finals to 17 frames, and the final to 18 frames.
