Queensland Legend Jai Arrow Battling MND: Billy Slater to Bring Star into Maroons Camp Ahead of Origin
Queensland legend Billy Slater is set to invite former Maroons star Jai Arrow into the Queensland camp ahead of Origin 1, after Arrow revealed he is battling motor neurone disease (MND). The move aims to lift the team’s spirits and provide a personal connection to the player during a challenging time.
Arrow, who has previously represented Queensland, is close friends with several current squad members. He is expected to join the camp when the team arrives in Sydney next Monday, according to Code Sports. The announcement of his diagnosis reportedly cast a sombre mood over the squad, but his presence is likely to provide a boost. Queensland are also exploring other ways to honour the talented player.
Kalyn Ponga, speaking on NRL 360, shared the impact Arrow has had on those around him. “It’s terrible news, it’s definitely been spoken about in this camp,” Ponga said. “I played a lot of footy against Jai, and he’s one of those guys you didn’t want to play against because of his passion and aggression—but after the game, you wanted to share a beer with him. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his loved ones. Jai is a strong bloke. He has a journey ahead, but he’s a man built for it.”
Maroons legend Allan Langer also expressed his support for Arrow, highlighting both his talent and character. “It was so sad to see this news. At 30 years old, with a young family, it’s tough,” Langer said. “He was a great talent and an even greater person. I’m sure the football community and Queensland fans will rally behind him. Hopefully, the team can play the way Jai loved playing for Queensland. His presence will inspire the boys. He never let us down when he pulled on the Maroon jersey.”
